Homecoming review – Julia Roberts' old-fashioned mystery ...

There are complicated long shots and the orchestral score is distractingly archaic.A military picture featuring fellow soldiers with their faces X-ed out suggests she may be a target of some sort.Ominous as a Hitchcock film; beautifully photographed as a De Palma film.

It was, in the end, a somewhat briefly told tale about two people working together to overcome the tragic fact that they were stuck in a system they couldn’t overcome. She’s undimmed from her glory days.Mostly, though, it’s interested in explaining that Audrey-Colin scene, and in exploring the larger dynamics of a company that would make such a monstrous drug.

Worse, she was doing it on the third-best streaming platform in a landscape so cluttered that only a tiny percentage of shows can achieve any sort of meaningful cultural impact.

Julia Roberts best performance possibly ever.Forgot your password?Don't have an account? Sign up here.Still, it’s frustrating to watch Audrey, who connived her way to the top, wring her hands like an unsure novice every time she faces the slightest of challenges.

Movie superstar Julia Roberts crushes here, benching her legendary smile - mostly - to play a frazzled, damaged administrator discovering the dark side of a corporate-run program for veterans. The return of Amazon’s psychological thriller features some new faces but a familiar storyline. The return of Amazon’s psychological thriller features some new faces but a familiar storyline.

She’s used more as a device to transport viewers through a labyrinth of covert actions and reactions.A slow burner yes but so satisfying, both emotionally and in terms of plot, by the time the characters come home.

'Homecoming' Season 2 Review: Déjà Vu All Over Again ...

Now the series, which was created by Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, is directed by executive producer Kyle Patrick Alvarez (“13 Reasons Why”).But that could be said about most of Season Two.As for what any of it has to do with James' Walter Cruz? Well, it's not hugely exciting, but it's definitely important enough to the plot of the season that I won't spoil it.

The Mr.Admittedly, the 18 months between seasons may have acted as its own version of the Homecoming drug, but when you go in knowing such a plot device exists, the question of what happened to Jackie becomes a much narrower one.Turns out television is exactly her medium.

(The story certainly doesn’t need more episodes, but some of the characters could have used them.).There is an excellent aesthetic here and wonderful performances, but one can't help but feel like the series becomes predictable. In that sense this momentum, this sense of “what the hell just happened?”, reminds you of another Amazon show, The Sinner.

It’s seven episodes instead of 10 — all, like last time, hovering around the 30-minute mark — and the story itself seems much thinner than the original, almost as if it exists solely to fill in the few blanks left by what was already a fairly complete and satisfying entity.Yes, I realise that this is the second time this phrase has been used in the space of three paragraphs, but that’s because Homecoming courts it so mercilessly.

‘Homecoming’ Season 2 Review: Janelle Monae Series Loses ...

We want to hear what you have to say but need to verify your account. The first episode introduces a series of clues related to the stranger's identity and the next six episodes are about answering every peculiar question in the cleanest way possible.Honestly, it’s dizzying how perfect it is.

We want to hear what you have to say but need to verify your account. The two clearly have a strong chemistry..Having run through that story and now pivoting to expanding its universe, “Homecoming” is making clear that certain of its florid devices can’t replace the power of human connection, something that feels sorely lacking on a show whose mythology is expanding but whose characters feel, in the end, forgettable.

It’s mature. In the present, Julia Roberts is a happy, driven administrator with a job that involves rehabilitating veterans back into civilian life.

For instance, one episode contains the single most inventive use of aspect ratio I have ever seen.Amazon’s big hope for autumn sees Roberts play a psychologist caught up in a complicated government programme. It's a pleasure to see Roberts stretch her legs on TV, particularly in her scenes opposite James, where her heart is most evident.

Ominous as a Hitchcock film; beautifully photographed as a De Palma film.Monáe is an interesting non-replacement, a performer of both tremendous presence and deceptive stillness, which works well as her character's disorientation increases. As entertaining as it was — and as great as Julia Roberts and Stephan James were in the lead roles — the result still felt like a bit of a disappointment; every time the show appeared poised to open up or dig deeper, it instead retreated into a mystery that initially seemed complex but ultimately dodged nuances related to PTSD and memory.'Homecoming' Season 2 Review: Déjà Vu All Over Again.
